Abstract
This study investigated the influence of job enrichment (skill variety, task identity, and autonomy) on employees’ engagement in selected pharmaceutical firms in Lagos State. The study adopted survey research design. Responses were collected from a sample size of one hundred and eighty (180) employees of selected pharmaceuticals firms with the aid of a structured questionnaire. Using regression analysis, the findings of this study revealed that skill variety had a positive but statistically insignificant effect on employee engagement (R² = 0.230, p > 0.05). In contrast, task identity (R² = 0.785, p < 0.05) and autonomy (R² = 0.750, p < 0.05) demonstrated strong, positive, and significant relationships with employee engagement. These results suggested that while exposure to diverse skills may not necessarily enhance engagement, employees become more engaged when they can identify with the outcome of their tasks and when they are granted discretion in how they perform their roles. It is concluded that task identity and autonomy are critical drivers of engagement, highlighting the need for organisations to prioritize job design strategies that promote ownership, responsibility, and decision-making freedom. Recommendations are made for managers to enhance task identity, foster autonomy, and integrate skill development for higher engagement level.
