Abstract
The country was recently hit by COVID-19, which left the informal handloom workers completely stranded, with the lockdown imposed putting lakhs of handloom weavers lives and livelihoods at risk. In this context, the current study aims to investigate the impact of pandemics and lockdown on the income level of the Sambalpuri weaving community. The field research is being conducted in ten villages in Odishas Subarnapur district. It is found that as there are no cooperative societies, weavers are reliant on master weavers, who pay meagre wages and find it difficult to feed their families and attend to medical emergencies. Using Henry Garrett Ranking and Kendall coefficient of Concordance, we attempt to investigate the dominance factor that forced them to work under the master weavers control. The most significant reasons, according to the findings, are a lack of working capital and loans obtained from the informal sector.
