The present study investigates the personal and environmental correlates of academic achievement of students in the government and private schools. Survey method is used to select a sample of 540 students from different categories of secondary level schools. Tools were chosen for measuring variables, namely, school satisfaction, sense of safety, psychological counselling needs and parental encouragement. The socio-economic background tool was developed by the investigator. Half early examination scores were taken as a measure of academic achievement. The results of the statistical analyses showed a significant positive correlation between the personal and environmental correlates and academic achievement of students in different categories of schools at the secondary level. On comparing the boys and girls, the girls are found to be significantly better in their personal and environmental correlates of academic achievement when compared to their counterparts in the same schools. Further, the students in private schools are found to be significantly better in their personal and environmental correlates of academic achievement compared to the students in government schools.
