Abstract
Jampui Hills, nestled in the northeastern corner of Tripura, is home to the Mizo community and is blessed with a conducive subtropical climate and fertile red soil. This fertile land has long sustained agrarian livelihoods through the cultivation of cash crops such as oranges, coffee, and areca nut apart from vegetable produces such as pumpkin and ginger. Even though historically reliant on subsistence agriculture, the region has witnessed a gradual shift toward plantation-based cash crop cultivation. Therefore, this paper investigates the transformative role of plantations, particularly areca nut, in catalyzing economic growth, reshaping agrarian livelihoods, and influencing socio-economic patterns in the region.
