Abstract
The gig economy has emerged as a significant source of employment and income generation in India, driven by digital platforms, flexible work arrangements, and increasing internet penetration. In Nagaland, the gig economy offers new opportunities for sustainable development by promoting self-employment, entrepreneurship, youth engagement, and rural connectivity. It enables individuals to participate in sectors such as food delivery, transportation, online services, handicrafts, digital marketing, and freelancing. The gig economy also supports inclusive economic growth by creating alternative livelihood opportunities in regions with limited formal employment. However, the sector faces several challenges, including inadequate digital infrastructure, lack of social security, income instability, skill gaps, and limited policy support. The absence of labour protection and financial security further affects the long-term sustainability of gig workers. This study examines the opportunities and challenges associated with the gig economy in Nagaland and highlights the need for effective government policies, digital skill development, and institutional support to ensure sustainable and inclusive economic development.
