Abstract
The present study examines the socio-economic and demographic conditions of the Munda tribal community residing in Basanti Block of South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal, India. Based on a survey of 40 households across four villages, covering a total population of 127 individuals, the study employs qualitative analysis using data collected through a self-structured household interview schedule during January–February 2026. The findings reveal a predominantly young population structure with noticeable gender disparity, low levels of educational attainment, and early marriage and childbirth practices, particularly among females. Occupational patterns indicate a heavy reliance on informal and daily wage labour, contributing to low household income and economic vulnerability. Although a significant proportion of households have access to banking facilities, gaps persist in effective utilization and financial literacy. Furthermore, a considerable section of the population lacks essential documentation such as ST certificates, limiting access to government welfare schemes. The study highlights the interconnected nature of socio-cultural practices and economic constraints, which collectively hinder overall development. It emphasizes the need for targeted, community-specific interventions focusing on education, livelihood diversification, social awareness, and institutional accessibility to ensure sustainable and inclusive development of the Munda tribal community.
