Abstract
The period between 1819 and 1846 marks a significant phase in the history of Kashmir, when the region came under the control of the Sikh Empire led by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. This transition followed decades of Afghan rule under the Durrani Empire, a period often remembered for political instability and economic hardship. When Sikh forces entered the Kashmir Valley in 1819, many inhabitants initially perceived them as liberators who would restore order and stability. However, the nature of Sikh governance soon revealed a more complex reality. This article examines Sikh rule in Kashmir through a historical lens, analyzing its administrative structure, economic policies, religious measures and broader social impact. By situating this period within the larger framework of regional politics and imperial expansion, it seeks to provide a balanced understanding of both its achievements and its limitations. It also examines how these changes affected the everyday lives of Kashmiris and altered the historical trajectory of the region.
