Abstract
Guidelines on Good Agricultural and Collection Practices (GACP) for Medicinal Plants (2003) provide a crucial, globally applicable framework aimed at ensuring the quality, safety, and efficacy of raw medicinal plant materials. As the global demand for herbal medicines grows, GACP addresses the risks of contamination, adulteration, and incorrect identification of raw materials at the initial production stage.
The guidelines offer comprehensive technical guidance on both agricultural cultivation (GAP) and wild collection (GCP), covering crucial areas such as plant identification, seed selection, cultivation management, sustainable harvesting techniques, post-harvest processing, and proper documentation to ensure traceability. Furthermore, the document highlights the importance of protecting endangered species and minimizing environmental impact through sustainable practices. Implementing these guidelines is recognized as the foundational step in quality assurance for herbal drug industries and serves to assist Member States in developing national standards
