Abstract
Objective: The study was designed to investigate the influence of strength training along with game-specific drills on physical and skill performance variables of sub-elite badminton players from Coimbatore clubs.
Methodology: To achieve the purpose of the study, thirty (N=30) girls sub elite badminton players from various academies in Coimbatore district would be selected as subjects. Their age ranged between 14 and 17 years. The subjects were divided into two equal groups fifteen n=15 in each group, namely Experimental group I (n=15) underwent strength Training and Group II acted as control group. The investigator did not make any attempt to equate the groups. The control group did not undergo any treatment. The experimental group was given training for period of 16 weeks of strength training. Data collected from the two groups before and after the training period were statistically examined for significant improvement using the dependent ‘t’ test. The statistical test was set to be significant if p >0.05 level of confidence.
Results: The results indicated that the physical and skill performance variables, namely arm explosive power, muscular endurance and forehand clear respectively improved significantly due to the strength training.
Conclusion: The strength training program was found to be feasible and effective in achieving an optimum level of selected physical fitness variables (arm explosive power, muscular endurance) and skill performance variables (forehand clear) of girls sub elite badminton players over an 16 week training period.
Keywords: Strength training, Physical fitness attributes, Skill performance and Badminton.
