Abstract
Finding the theme in the proverbs of Matalom, Leyte, is the aim of this study. This study employed a descriptive qualitative methodology. Participants in the study were 60 years of age or older and were from the town of Matalom. One of the study's tools was the collection of proverbs from the participants. There are 345 proverbs gathered from the town of Matalom, Leyte and six (6) categories are included in the proverbs. It has been found in the proverbs that many of them have been involved in the Proverbs Expressing General Truths and Observation About Life and Human Nature (Category 4), followed by Miscellaneous Proverbs (typically expressive of specific realities to a certain area (Category 6), The proverbs expressing a system of values (Category 3), the fourth Proverbs Expressing a General Attitude Towards Life and the Laws That Govern belonging to ethical proverbs recommending certain virtues and condemning certain vices (Category 2). In the findings the researcher realized that proverbs are a useful tool for enforcing the law of good manners. They are also an effective way to expand the dissemination of advice, education, reminders, and etiquette instruction, particularly for young people who are highly infected with the liberal thinking of the new generation, which lacks an appreciation for proper behavior. It is recommended that researchers have more study in the people's wisdom in other towns of Southwest Leyte.
