Abstract
The aim of this study is to identify and describe the persistence of the Cabalianon language. Twenty (20) volunteers who were 60 years of age or older were chosen from San Juan, Southern Leyte's barangay Basak and barangay Agay-ay. Participants with relevant experience and expertise in utilizing the Cabalianon language were chosen through the use of the purposive sampling technique. A voice recorder, an observation checklist, a semi-structured interview guide, and field notes were the tools utilized to record the information and conversations with the participants. According to the study, there are differences between the dialects used in barangays Basak and Agay-ay and those of other barangays within the same municipality. These include phonological and lexical alterations, which are especially apparent when certain phonemes are eliminated or replaced. For example, terms like katulo-katuyo and bawos-bayos frequently use "Y" in place of the letters "L" and "W" in Basak and Agay-ay dialects. Likewise, "D" is used in place of the letter "R," as in iring-iding. The study also found that everyday usage of the original language, intergenerational transmission, and a strong sense of cultural identification are the three main factors contributing to the language's preservation in Barangay Basak and Agay-ay. The findings demonstrate that the interwoven socio-cultural and linguistic dynamics of the two communities, rather than a single cause, are responsible for the successful language retention in these two barangays, despite the growing influence of modern languages in the millennial and Gen Z eras. This demonstrates that when an indigenous language is actively used, transmitted from one generation to the next, and closely linked to cultural identity, it may be preserved both successfully and successfully. The researchers suggest more research, with an emphasis on the morphological differences found in the two barangays that were discussed.
