Abstract
The aim of this study is to analyze the language registers of farmers, fisherfolk, and the church community in Maasin, Southern Leyte, Philippines particularly focusing on the meanings of the collected words in the three social contexts, and to present their structure based on word form and part of speech. This research employs a qualitative design, with participants composed of farmers, fisherfolk, and individuals active in the church, selected through purposive sampling. Twenty participants were chosen for each social context. The main instruments for data collection were semi-structured interviews, field notes, and a voice recorder. The study found that there are differences in meaning depending on context, as well as similarities and differences in word formation. Most of the words gathered were root words and affixed words. The collected terms comprised different parts of speech, specifically nouns, verbs, and adjectives. The research revealed that the language registers used in the sectors of farming, fishing, and church have distinct lexical and morphological features that reflect their daily activities, beliefs, and social interactions. The variations in meaning, word structure, and parts of speech affirm the sociolinguistic principle that language is shaped and developed according to its social context. It is recommended that continued research, documentation, and archiving of language registers in local sectors be undertaken to preserve linguistic richness and prevent the loss of important terms that hold historical and cultural significance.
