Abstract
This research aims to examine the values reflected in the spoken-word poetry created by Senior High School students. A qualitative approach, specifically content analysis, was employed in this study. The participants were selected from Grade 11 students of the Senior High School Department of Sogod National High School. The primary data source was the poems composed by the participants, which were based on two specific situations crafted by the researcher and aligned with classroom competencies. The spoken-word poetry writing was conducted in the form of a contest, and the participants’ compositions strictly adhered to the given themes. Through analysis, sixteen (16) values were identified in the students’ works. This included environmentalism, unity, patriotism, humaneness, love for others, compassion, courage or assertiveness, kindness, disrespect, regret, judgmental attitude, indifference, friendliness, joy, negligence, and perseverance in pursuing dreams. Among these, the most dominant values were unity, environmentalism, patriotism, and humaneness indicating a strong sense of social awareness and nationalism among the youth. The findings suggest that despite the influence of modernization and media, young people continue to uphold core values such as unity, compassion, love for the country, and environmental consciousness. This reflects a hopeful outlook for future generations. Moreover, the active involvement of teachers in providing relevant and meaningful contexts plays a vital role in encouraging students to express their emotions and thoughts with depth and sincerity. It is recommended that spoken-word poetry be further integrated into subjects such as Filipino, Values Education and Social Studies to enhance students’ expression and appreciation of values.
