Abstract
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar stands as one of India’s most visionary social reformers, whose commitment to social justice and human dignity transcended limitations of caste, creed, and gender. His steadfast advocacy for women’s empowerment positioned him far ahead of his era, challenging entrenched patriarchal norms and institutional inequalities. Ambedkar’s approach towards women’s liberation was multidimensional: he fought for equal educational opportunities, legal rights, and economic independence, with a special focus on vulnerable and marginalized groups. Pioneering legislation as the chief architect of the Indian Constitution, Ambedkar championed groundbreaking reforms, such as property rights for women, the right to divorce, equality in adoption, and maintenance, among others. He saw women’s empowerment as essential for nation-building and sustainable development. His efforts led to the removal of oppressive practices including child marriage, sati, and the denial of widow remarriage, thus laying the foundation for a just and egalitarian society. The methodologies employed in this research include a review of historical documents, legislative reforms, and qualitative analyses from both primary and secondary sources. This paper explores the depth of Ambedkar’s vision for gender equality, the implementation of constitutional provisions, and the challenges that persist today. Ambedkar’s forward-thinking ideals continue to inspire policies aimed at gender justice, demonstrating the vital role of women in India’s progress. The findings reaffirm that Ambedkar’s strategies for empowerment were not only transformative for his time, but remain acutely relevant to contemporary debates on gender rights, equality, and inclusive development.
