Abstract
Introduction: Pre-conceptional care is a crucial foundation for ensuring the health of both parents and the future child. In today’s competitive world, the modern generation often prefers to have only one child. In Ayurveda, this responsibility is emphasized through the concept of Supraja, where preparation for conception must be deliberate and holistic. Panchakarma, the prime detoxification therapy of Ayurveda, plays a pivotal role in balancing Doshas, purifying Dhatus and achieving Beej Shuddhi. This study highlights the role of Panchakarma in pre-conceptional care and its potential integration with modern fertility practices.
Aim: To evaluate the role of Panchakarma in enhancing reproductive health and preparing the body for healthy conception.
Methodology: A literary review was conducted by analysing references from classical Ayurvedic texts and modern scientific literature. Emphasis was placed on the role of various Panchakarma procedures in enhancing reproductive health and supporting successful conception.
Results: Findings suggest that Panchakarma therapies contribute to the purification of Shukravaha and Artavavaha Srotas, thereby improving fertility potential. Modern evidence supports their role in reducing oxidative stress, regulating endocrine functions and improving gamete quality leading to Supraja. These holistic interventions address both physiological and psychological aspects of infertility.
Discussion: Unlike conventional reproductive techniques that primarily focus on assisted conception, Ayurveda emphasizes pre-conceptional purification and systemic strengthening. Panchakarma not only supports fertility but also helps minimize genetic and hereditary risks, thereby ensuring healthier progeny. Despite its potential, there is a lack of extensive research exploring the integration of Ayurvedic concepts with contemporary fertility treatment.
