Abstract
The Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) has significantly transformed the structure of higher education evaluation in India. One of its core components is Continuous Internal Evaluation (CIE), which seeks to assess students’ performance throughout the semester rather than relying solely on final examinations. This research explores the implementation of continuous internal evaluation practices in higher education institutions in Assam and examines their impact on teaching methodologies, student engagement and learning outcomes. This study analyses how internal assessments such as assignments, presentations, quizzes, class tests and projects contribute to continuous learning and academic development. The findings suggest that CIE encourages regular academic engagement, improves feedback mechanisms between teachers and students and fosters learner-centred pedagogy. However, challenges such as administrative workload, issues of transparency and inconsistencies in implementation remain significant concerns. The study highlights the need for clear institutional guidelines, teacher training and standardised evaluation practices to enhance the effectiveness of continuous internal evaluation under CBCS in Assam.
