Abstract
The therapeutic landscape of gastrointestinal medicine has seen a resurgence in the utilization of naturally derived polymers, among which the seed husk of Plantago ovata, commonly referred to as Isabgol or Psyllium, remains a cornerstone for the management of motility disorders. As a primary bulk-forming laxative, Isabgol is distinguished by its unique physicochemical profile, characterized by a high concentration of mucilaginous polysaccharides that exhibit exceptional water-holding capacity and resistance to human digestive enzymes. The study of Isabgol transcends basic pharmacognosy, encompassing intricate aspects of phytochemical characterization, advanced pharmacological modulation of the enteric nervous system, and rigorous quality control measures aligned with international pharmacopoeial standards such as the Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP), British Pharmacopoeia (BP), and United States Pharmacopoeia (USP).
