Abstract
Atyayika conditions in the Sushruta Samhita represent acute, rapidly progressing, and life-threatening states that demand immediate medical intervention. While Ayurveda is guided by well-defined general principles (Utsarga), such as seasonal regimens, procedural indications, and therapeutic timing, these may not always be applicable in emergency situations. Apavarga Tantrayukti, defined as the exclusion of a specific case from a general rule, provides the methodological basis for such justified exceptions in critical conditions. This study analyzes various contexts of Atyayika Chikitsa and demonstrates how Apavarga Tantrayukti provides a logical framework for justified deviation from these general rules. Through a literary analytical approach, references from different sections of the text were systematically compiled and categorized into procedural, clinical, prognostic, chronological, and pharmacological domains. The findings reveal a consistent pattern wherein acute conditions necessitate overriding standard guidelines to prioritize Prana Rakshana (preservation of life). Examples such as Agnikarma, Siravyadha, Swedana, and management of conditions like Ashmari, Jvara, and traumatic injuries illustrate the practical application of this principle. The study highlights that such deviations are not arbitrary but are based on rational clinical judgment (Yukti), emphasizing flexibility within the Ayurvedic framework. Thus, Atyayika Chikitsa emerges as a structured and essential component of emergency care, reflecting both the depth and adaptability of classical Ayurvedic knowledge.
