Abstract
Women’s empowerment has emerged as a crucial component of sustainable development, particularly in relation to health and well-being. Kerala is often recognized for its remarkable achievements in literacy, healthcare, and social development. However, despite these advancements, gender inequalities continue to influence women’s autonomy and access to healthcare. In this context, Kudumbashree, the poverty eradication and women empowerment programme initiated by the Government of Kerala, has played a transformative role in enhancing women’s socio-economic participation and health awareness. This study examines the relationship between women’s empowerment and health outcomes with specific reference to Kudumbashree in Kollam district of Kerala. The research adopts a descriptive and analytical design using both primary and secondary data. Primary data were collected from 120 Kudumbashree members through a semi-structured interview schedule. The findings indicate that participation in Kudumbashree has significantly improved women’s health awareness, healthcare access, nutritional practices, and decision-making power. The study concludes that community-based empowerment initiatives can effectively contribute to improved public health outcomes and gender equality.
