Abstract
Since independence, India have achieved major improvements in many health indicators, but when compares to its counterparts, India seems to be far from satisfactory in many indicators. Government of India introduced major healthcare reforms, particularly the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) in 2005, later expanded as the National Health Mission (NHM). This paper examines the impact of NHM on various health indicators and compares pre and post NHM period. It evaluates the trends in IMR, MMR, U5MR, and institutional births across Indian states during the pre- and post-NHM periods using the nationally representative data such as NFHS, RBI data base of Indian economy, EPWR-ITS. The findings reveal major improvements in health outcomes after the NHM, particularly in high focus states. However there exists interstate disparities and slower progress in recent years. There is an urgent need of higher investment and policy commitments to achieve universal health coverage in India.
