Abstract
Raja Ravi Varma continues to occupy a rare position in Indian visual culture. He is remembered not only as a nineteenth-century painter but as a maker of images that remain active in worship, calendar art, cinema, photography, textiles, advertising, luxury design and global fashion. This article asks why contemporary India repeatedly recalls Ravi Varma in new forms instead of treating him as a closed historical figure. The argument is that Ravi Varma functions today as a visual operating system: a recognisable structure of poses, drapes, gestures, mythological moods, feminine archetypes and narrative compositions that can be activated across media. Through selected examples - Pushpamala N.’s staged photographic Lakshmi, G Venket Ram’s 2020 NAAM calendar, Gaurang Shah’s khadi-jamdani reinterpretations, Titan Clocks x MAP’s Ravi Varma timepieces and Ravi Varma-inspired appearances at the 2026 Met Gala - the article examines how the artist moves from painting to performance, cloth, timekeeping and celebrity display. His current relevance is not nostalgia alone. It is a negotiation with gender, visual memory, Indian identity, artisanal labour, commodity culture and global cultural presentation. Ravi Varma persists because his images are historically recognisable yet materially unfinished, always available for re-reading and re-materialisation.
