Abstract
This article examines three wooden craft traditions of Andhra Pradesh, Etikoppaka, Kondapalli, and Settigunta/Lakshmigaripalli, through a comparative framework of material, tools, form, imagery, labour, and institutional support. Although all three traditions work with wood and are associated with toys, dolls or decorative objects, they represent distinct knowledge systems. Etikoppaka is shaped by lathe turning, lacquer colouring, soft Ankudu wood and rounded tactile surfaces; Kondapalli is organised around carving, component assembly, coating, painting and household-based production; and Settigunta/Lakshmigaripalli is associated with Raja-Rani dolls, red-sanders and other local woods, wedding gifting, Navaratri Bommala Koluvu and emerging cluster recognition. The study uses a qualitative comparative method supported by published scholarship, official GI and ODOP records, institutional sources and recent public documentation. The analysis argues that the identity of a wooden craft cannot be understood through material alone. Wood becomes culturally meaningful through a technical ecology of tools, embodied skill, domestic workspace, market circulation and ritual use. The comparison also shows uneven documentation: Etikoppaka and Kondapalli have stronger institutional visibility and GI recognition, while Settigunta remains less represented in academic writing despite its cultural and livelihood value. The article contributes to craft studies and regional art history by reading these traditions as living systems of design intelligence rather than merely as heritage commodities.
Keywords: Andhra Pradesh crafts, Etikoppaka, Kondapalli, material culture, Settigunta, wooden toys.
